Asbestos-containing material (ACM) on our eastern beaches.

Objective:

Your Residents Association on behalf of a local resident approached Auckland Council to advocate for improved management of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) identified along local beaches and reserves, particularly at Roberta Reserve (Glendowie Bay) and Andersons Bay near the Glendowie Boating Club. This involves seeking clearer identification of affected areas, professional clean-up where required, appropriate public signage, and a coordinated approach to monitoring and reporting to ensure risks are properly managed.

This work also includes advocating for clear communication and protective measures to safeguard the community, particularly vulnerable groups such as kindergartens, playgroups, and primary school children who regularly visit these areas. The Association is seeking a defined and transparent coastal asbestos management approach for the Orākei area, including regular monitoring, risk assessment, and long-term planning, so residents can make informed decisions and continue to safely enjoy local beaches and reserves.

Description:

The St Heliers and Glendowie Residents Association has been working with Auckland Council on the identification and management of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) along our local beaches and reserves. This includes monitoring Council actions, supporting clear signage and reporting processes, and advocating for improved communication to ensure public safety and informed use of these areas.

We are pleased to report the following progress:

Challenges:
There has been a lack of consistent communication from Council regarding the level of risk, timelines for remediation, and public safety protocols. We are continuing to advocate for clearer accountability, a defined management plan, and regular updates to the community.

We are also aware that many kindergartens, playgroups, and primary school groups regularly visit this area. It is essential that they are made aware of the potential risk so they can ensure their Health and Safety Management protocols are appropriately followed. This is particularly important, as young children are more vulnerable to the effects of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) than adults.

Next Steps:
We are working to ensure that Auckland Council formalises a coastal asbestos management approach for Orakei, including regular monitoring, risk assessment, and long-term remediation planning. Our goal is to see all residents empowered with accurate information so they can make informed decisions when using local beaches and reserves.

Your Association remains committed to keeping our public spaces safe, accessible, and well-managed for all.
