Asbestos Containing Material (ACM), on our Beaches.
Objective:
Description:
Objective:
Your Residents Association has been working with Auckland Council to ensure the safe management of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) identified along the beaches and reserves in our area, particularly along the Roberta Reserve (Glendoie Bay) and Andersons Bay (near the Glendowie Boating Club). This includes pushing for trying to identify where this material is coming from, undertaking professional clean-up of the area, clear signage, ongoing monitoring, and a transparent process that informs and protects local residents.
Description:
Your Residents’ Association has been actively involved in identifying areas where asbestos-containing material (ACM) is present along our coastline. After receiving concerns from a concerned local, we began site visits, liaised with Council officers, and requested urgent action to inform the public and reduce risk.
We are pleased to report the following progress:
- Council officers have acknowledged the presence of ACM and begun work on signage to alert the public in affected areas.
- Initial signs have gone up at several key points, with more to follow.
- A reporting process is now in place for residents to log new potential findings.
Challenges:
There has been a lack of consistent communication from Council regarding the level of risk, timelines for remediation, and public safety protocols. We are continuing to advocate for clearer accountability, a defined management plan, and regular updates to the community.
We are also aware that many kindergartens, playgroups, and primary school groups regularly visit this area. It is essential that they are made aware of the potential risk so they can ensure their Health and Safety Management protocols are appropriately followed. This is particularly important, as young children are more vulnerable to the effects of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) than adults.
Next Steps:
We are working to ensure that Auckland Council formalises a coastal asbestos management approach for Orakei, including regular monitoring, risk assessment, and long-term remediation planning. Our goal is to see all residents empowered with accurate information so they can make informed decisions when using local beaches and reserves.
Your Association remains committed to keeping our public spaces safe, accessible, and well-managed for all.
